A gym in Lebanon had the same problem every gym has: a growing list of former members who stopped coming. Some had left months ago. Some years ago. None of them had been systematically contacted. They were sitting in the records as inactive, quietly representing thousands of dollars in potential monthly revenue that wasn't being collected.

The gym ran one WhatsApp campaign to a segment of those inactive members using Hassil's Official Meta Campaign feature. Within one week, 20 members came back and reactivated their subscriptions.

This article covers exactly what they did, what the results looked like, and how any gym in Lebanon or the Gulf can replicate this approach.

The Numbers

The campaign results, tracked through Hassil's campaign dashboard:

187
Messages sent
99%
Delivery rate
23
Members responded directly
20
Members came back within one week

For context: this gym had over 1,500 inactive members in their records. This campaign targeted one segment of that list — a fraction of the total inactive base. The remaining inactive members represent future campaign opportunities.

💰 At a conservative $50/month average membership, 20 returning members adds $1,000/month in recurring revenue. One campaign. One week. The cost of Hassil's plan that month was a fraction of that.

Why Most Gyms Don't Do This

The reason inactive members stay inactive at most gyms isn't complicated: nobody contacts them. The gym owner knows they should reach out, but the process of going through an old list, figuring out who has left and who might come back, writing a message that doesn't sound desperate, and sending it individually to each person is time-consuming and feels awkward.

The result: gyms keep acquiring new members to replace the ones they've lost, paying for marketing and word-of-mouth, when the easier and cheaper option — reaching out to people who already know the gym and liked it — sits untouched.

What Made the Campaign Work

The right channel

WhatsApp. Not email, not Instagram DMs, not an app notification. WhatsApp is where Lebanese and Gulf members respond. A message from a known gym number, arriving on WhatsApp, gets seen. The same message by email gets ignored.

The right tone

The message that performs in Lebanon and Gulf culture for a reactivation campaign is warm and personal, not promotional or desperate. "We miss you" consistently outperforms "Special offer — come back this month." The relationship is the hook, not the discount.

The message the gym sent was bilingual Arabic and English, addressed members by name, and felt like a personal reach-out from the gym — not automated marketing. Because it was sent through Meta's official infrastructure with a pre-approved template, it came from the gym's own number, with the gym's name and logo appearing in the message header.

The right list

Not all inactive members are equally worth contacting. The highest-return segment is members who were regular for at least 2–3 months before going inactive — they have an established relationship with the gym and likely left for a temporary reason (life got busy, travel, a financial constraint, a season change) rather than a fundamental decision to stop. Members who paid once and never came back are a lower-priority segment.

Official Meta infrastructure

Bulk WhatsApp messages sent through unofficial tools — apps that automate WhatsApp Web or use unofficial APIs — risk account restrictions or bans. This is a real risk that gyms in Lebanon have encountered, including from messages sent in short bursts within minutes. The campaign used Meta's official WhatsApp Business API, which routes messages through Meta's own infrastructure. The result: no account risk, high deliverability, and delivery tracking included.

How to Run the Same Campaign for Your Gym

Step 1: Identify your inactive members

In Hassil, inactive members have their own section — members whose subscriptions have lapsed and who haven't been active for a set period. You can see exactly who went inactive, when, and for how long. Filter to members who were regular before going inactive — these are your highest-probability reactivations.

Step 2: Prepare your message

Keep it short. Keep it warm. Include the member's name. Make it bilingual. Don't mention a specific offer in the first message — the goal of the first message is to open a conversation, not close a sale.

Step 3: Send through official Meta infrastructure

Hassil connects your gym's WhatsApp Business number to Meta's official API and submits message templates for approval. Once approved, running the campaign is one click — select your inactive member list, confirm the template, send. Hassil tracks delivery, reads, and responses in real time.

Step 4: Handle responses personally

When members respond, reply quickly and personally. They've indicated they're open to coming back — the conversation from this point is easy. Confirm their new subscription start, any changes to their plan, and welcome them back. The campaign opens the door; the personal follow-up closes it.

Step 5: Plan the next campaign

A single campaign to one segment is a start, not the whole strategy. This gym has 1,500+ inactive members — the campaign above reached 187 of them. Future campaigns can target different segments: longer-inactive members, specific membership types, members who lapsed during Ramadan, members from specific years. Each campaign is a new opportunity to recover revenue from people who already know and liked the gym.

Reactivation vs New Member Acquisition: The Real Comparison

Acquiring a new member in Lebanon or the Gulf requires marketing spend, social media effort, or word-of-mouth — and then a sales conversation with someone who has never experienced the gym. The cost in time and money is real.

Reactivating a former member requires one WhatsApp message to someone who already knows the gym, already liked it, and left for a reason that may no longer apply. The "sale" is re-establishing a relationship, not starting one from scratch.

📊 The economics favor reactivation significantly at most gym sizes. Yet most gyms spend more time and money on new member acquisition than on systematic reactivation of former members. The inactive member list is the most underutilized asset most gyms have.

What Happens When Members Don't Respond

A 12% direct response rate means 88% of the campaign list didn't respond. This is normal and expected. Most of those people saw the message — with a 99% delivery rate and typical WhatsApp open rates, the vast majority read it — but didn't reply. That doesn't mean the campaign failed for them.

Some of those members will come in without replying. Some will think about it and contact the gym weeks later. Some will mention it to a friend who is still a member. The response rate measures direct replies; the actual impact on return visits is typically higher.

For members who don't respond: wait 3–4 weeks and send a second, different message. Don't send the same message twice. Two well-spaced, varied campaigns recover significantly more members than one.
